Cass Photography Workshops - Scriptunas Images
  • Cass Photography Workshops

A Cass Scenic Railroad State Park tradition since 2008, the Cass Photo Workshops offer something for nearly every type of photographer. Led by seasoned photographers Walter Scriptunas II and Clayton Spangler, the workshop weekends include not only great learning experiences, but also a great steam railroading photography experience. Our workshops are small, typically including only 25 participants, providing great hands on teaching and clean photo lines. The Cass Photo Workshops continue to evolve each and every year, always providing something new and exciting for participants.

This year's workshop will take place on October 6-8, 2017.

More information on 2017's workshop will be released in the spring. In the meantime, feel free to read about 2016's event below.

2016 Fall Photography Workshop Information

We are excited to announce that this year’s Cass Scenic Railroad State Park Fall Photography Workshop will take place October 7th through 9th. These date’s should coincide with peak fall color in the high mountains of West Virginia!

This action packed weekend will feature multiple geared steam locomotives, a steam powered freight train, classroom teaching sessions, night photo session, astrophotography (weather permitting), town and lumber mill ruin photography and other great opportunities only offered to those who attend this special weekend.

Saturday will start off at the Cass depot where we will have the opportunity to photograph the trains as they make multiple photo runbys around the depot and mill areas. Following this we will photograph the ruins of the Cass Mill before breaking for lunch. After lunch,  participants will be led around the town of Cass and into select buildings. This will offer a great opportunity to photograph the unique, early 20th century architecture of the former lumber town. The day will conclude with a night photo session at the coaling dock and locomotive servicing area. If the weather cooperates, participants will also have the opportunity to photograph the stars of the Milky Way as they drape overhead. Pocahontas County is known for its minimal light pollution, making it one of the best places in the East for astrophotography!

On Sunday we will board our special photo train at the Cass depot. Our steam powered train will feature multiple freight cars. We will be traveling to Whittaker Station with photo stops at many popular locations along with way including over streams, road crossings, switchbacks, tight curves and s-curves. Our small group will allow us to disembark our train and fit into spots that are not possible with larger groups and help us maximize our time on the mountain. Actors, props and other surprises will be provided to help enhance select stops along the way.

This workshop is priced at $250. Price include’s Sunday breakfast aboard the train.
